Research-based and hands-on are different

We clearly distinguish between research-based recommendations, hands-on testing and articles that combine both. We do not claim to have personally tested a product when we have not.

Evidence maturity labels

Catalogue assessments identify their evidence depth. Product-specific evidence uses official information plus independent coverage of the named item. Category-supported evidence combines official information with broader independent comparison context. Early or evolving, range-level and editorial-blueprint labels warn when evidence is newer, the exact model varies or the recommendation is a configurable setup rather than a fixed tested product. Service assessments are time-sensitive because plans and features change. Source links are editorial references rather than affiliate links.

What we evaluate

The criteria change by category. A gaming mouse might be judged on shape, sensor behaviour, weight, controls and wireless performance, while a monitor might be assessed around panel quality, resolution, refresh behaviour, ports and ergonomics. Software is considered around workflow fit, features, reliability, integrations, pricing, privacy and export options.

How products make a shortlist

We look for products or services that solve a clear problem for a defined buyer. Popularity alone is not enough. We consider competing options, current availability, meaningful drawbacks and whether paying more actually gives the intended user something useful.

First-hand evidence

Where we own or test a product, we aim to add original observations, photographs, measurements or workflow notes that help readers understand the experience beyond the specification sheet. Where testing is limited, that limitation is stated.

Prices and availability

Retail pricing changes frequently. We therefore avoid presenting a temporary price as permanent and use “check latest price” links where appropriate. A displayed “prices checked” date is only shown when it has actually been reviewed.

No invented ratings

We do not generate star ratings or product-review schema merely to create a richer search result. Any future score must be based on a defined editorial method and supported by the content on the page.
