Research-led guide. Home batteries are installed electrical systems, not ordinary plug-in accessories. The Tools and Tech has not claimed hands-on testing of the products mentioned below. This guide uses current manufacturer documentation and UK safety information to explain what buyers should compare before choosing a system.
Quick answer
Do not choose a home battery by kWh capacity alone. The important combination is usable capacity, continuous output power, backup design, solar and inverter compatibility, expansion options, warranty conditions and how the installer configures the system for the property. A battery that stores plenty of energy can still be a poor fit if it cannot supply the loads you expect during an outage.
Current systems worth understanding
Tesla Powerwall 3
Tesla’s current UK information lists 13.5 kWh of nominal battery energy for Powerwall 3 and an integrated solar inverter. Tesla states that Powerwall 3 is intended for new solar-and-storage installations but can also be added to existing solar. Output is configurable for local conditions and the system can be expanded with Powerwall 3 Expansion units. Installation is through a Tesla Certified Installer.
Safety distinction: the Great Britain safety programme announced in September 2026 concerns affected Powerwall 2 systems. It should not be presented as a blanket warning covering Powerwall 3. See our Powerwall 2 safety alert for the exact official guidance.
Enphase IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase
Enphase’s current EMEA documentation lists 5.0 kWh of usable capacity for the IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase. It is an AC-coupled system with integrated battery microinverters and can operate in single-phase or three-phase configurations. Enphase lists 3.84 kVA continuous apparent power in single-phase configuration, with different per-phase behaviour in three-phase use.
What to compare before buying
Usable capacity
Capacity tells you how much energy the battery can store, but the right size depends on household consumption, solar generation, tariff strategy and how much reserve you want to keep for outages. A larger battery is not automatically better value if it is rarely cycled.
Continuous and peak output
Power output determines which loads can run at the same time. Check continuous output, short-duration peak capability and any limits that apply in backup mode. High-starting-current appliances such as some pumps and motors can be more demanding than their normal running consumption suggests.
Backup capability
Battery storage does not automatically mean whole-home backup. Some systems need additional gateway or changeover equipment, and some configurations are intentionally non-backup. Confirm which circuits will remain powered during an outage and whether solar can continue charging the battery while the grid is down.
AC-coupled versus DC-coupled
AC-coupled batteries can be attractive for retrofits because they can work alongside an existing solar inverter. Integrated or DC-coupled systems can reduce conversion stages in a new installation. The best architecture depends on whether the property already has solar, the existing inverter, expansion plans and the desired backup design.
Inverter compatibility
Do not assume every battery works with every solar inverter. Some batteries contain their own inverter, while others rely on a compatible hybrid inverter. The exact combination should be approved by the manufacturer and installer.
Warranty and cycle conditions
Read the energy-throughput, cycle, retained-capacity and operating-condition terms rather than comparing warranty length alone. Remote monitoring, internet connectivity and software support can also be important parts of a modern battery system.
Tariffs and grid charging
A home battery can be used with solar, time-of-use tariffs or both. Whether grid charging saves money depends on the difference between import rates, export rates, conversion losses, battery wear and how often the stored energy is actually used. Avoid guaranteed savings claims based only on battery size.
Installation and safety
Home batteries should be specified and installed by appropriately competent professionals using the manufacturer’s installation requirements and applicable electrical and fire-safety guidance. Position, ventilation or thermal requirements, cable routes, protection devices, backup changeover equipment and internet connectivity all need to be considered as part of the system rather than after purchase.
Frequently asked questions
How many kWh does a home battery need?
There is no universal number. Start with real household consumption, daytime solar generation, evening demand, tariff goals and the loads you want to support during an outage.
Can a battery run the whole house during a power cut?
Some systems can, but only when the battery output, gateway or changeover equipment and circuit design support the required loads. Other installations back up only selected circuits or provide no backup at all.
Do I need solar panels to use a home battery?
No. Some batteries can charge from the grid for time-of-use tariff management, although the economics and available functions vary by system and tariff.
Final verdict
Treat home storage as a complete electrical system rather than a battery box. Compare usable energy, power output, backup architecture, compatibility and warranty together, then have the installation designed around the property and the household’s actual consumption. Powerwall 3 and Enphase IQ Battery 5P illustrate two different current approaches: integrated solar-and-storage and AC-coupled modular storage.
