Amazon Echo Show 15 (2nd Gen) vs Show 21, 11, 8 & Echo Hub: UK Buying Guide

Quick answer: why the Echo Show 15 stands out

The Amazon Echo Show 15 (2nd generation, 2024) occupies a useful middle ground between a kitchen television, family noticeboard and smart-home touchscreen. Its 15.6-inch Full HD display is large enough for shared calendars, to-do lists, photo displays and recipes at a glance, while built-in Fire TV adds streaming with an included Alexa Voice Remote. This is a more convincing fit for a communal wall than a smaller bedside Echo Show. However, the 21-inch model may be better in a big room, and neither should be mistaken for an HDMI-input monitor.

Our shortlist: choose the Show 15 for household organisation and occasional video; Show 21 for more screen area; Show 11 for a modern countertop display; Show 8 for smaller kitchens and desks; Echo Hub when the main aim is dedicated control of lights, cameras and routines rather than entertainment.

What the device offers

Amazon’s second-generation Show 15 combines a 15.6-inch 1080p touchscreen, 13MP camera with auto-framing, physical camera cover, microphone controls, Wi-Fi 6E, stereo speaker system and built-in Fire TV. Amazon also describes a smart-home controller with Matter, Thread and Zigbee capabilities for compatible equipment. The distinction between the 2024 second generation and the earlier 2021 Echo Show 15 matters: hardware, camera and audio capabilities differ, so compare the model generation before buying refurbished units.

Best use cases

  • Shared family organiser: keep calendars, reminders and shopping lists where everyone can see them rather than on one person’s phone.
  • Kitchen video: use supported Fire TV streaming services and the supplied voice remote while cooking or eating.
  • Smart-home access: see compatible cameras and control frequently used devices using touch or Alexa.
  • Digital photo frame: display family photographs between active tasks.
  • Video calls: the 13MP camera is more appropriate to a shared room than a tiny smart-speaker screen.

What gives us pause

A wall-mounted screen needs a nearby UK power socket, a safe cable route and enough clearance for the supplied mount. A freestanding counter stand is a separate purchase. The display is Full HD, not 4K, and its Fire TV integration does not mean it accepts an arbitrary external HDMI video source. Persistent widgets, supported apps, subscriptions and Alexa+ functions may change with account region, software updates and service eligibility. A larger smart display can also be more intrusive in bedrooms or privacy-sensitive rooms; use the physical camera cover and microphone controls and review household permissions.

Echo Show 21: Amazon’s largest smart display (“newest gen”)

Product clarification: Amazon markets the Echo Show 21 as its “newest gen” 21-inch smart display. 21 means the screen size, not a third generation. The first Echo Show 21 was announced in November 2024 alongside the updated second-generation Echo Show 15. These remain distinct models, so listings should not be labelled “Echo Show 15 (3rd Gen)” or conflated with third-generation Echo Show 8 hardware.

The Show 21 brings a larger 21-inch Full HD (1080p) touchscreen, built-in Fire TV, an included Alexa Voice Remote, and an in-box wall mount. Amazon also lists a 13MP auto-framing camera, privacy cover, Wi-Fi 6E, and support for compatible Matter, Thread and Zigbee smart-home equipment. Its larger display can make shared calendars, recipes, camera feeds and video easier to see in a kitchen/diner. The trade-offs are wall space, power-cable placement, and price; it is a smart display rather than a general-purpose HDMI monitor. Its Full HD resolution does not offer more pixels than the smaller Show 15. Which Echo Show devices are actually third generation?

Generation numbers are model-specific. Amazon’s current UK device list identifies the Echo Show 5 (3rd generation, 2023), Echo Show 8 (3rd generation, 2023) and Echo Show 10 (3rd generation). By contrast, the wall-mounted Echo Show 15 is currently listed as second generation (2024). The 2025 Echo Show 8 is a separate newer release, rather than the 2023 third-generation version. Avoid buying from a listing headed only “newest generation” without checking the release year and exact model.

Third-generation modelUse caseBuying caution
Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen, 2023)Compact bedside, desk or kitchen clock and Alexa screenIts small display and 2MP camera are less suited to shared family planning; verify current stock
Echo Show 8 (3rd Gen, 2023)Countertop Alexa screen with smart-home controls and 13MP cameraCompare with the separate newer Show 8 (2025 release); do not assume the same hardware
Echo Show 10 (3rd Gen, 2021)Larger moving-screen video calls and voice assistanceOlder generation and a different physical design from wall-mounted Show 15

What about the 2025 Echo Show 8 and 11?

Amazon’s 2025 Show 8 and Show 11 use the AZ3 Pro platform and updated display and speaker architecture, with 13MP cameras. They are stronger candidates for a kitchen counter, office sideboard or bedside space where a large wall-mounted screen would dominate. The Show 11 offers a larger display; the Show 8 is more compact. Check the year in the seller’s product title, as older Echo Show 8 generations can still appear in listings. The adjustable stand advertised for these models is sold separately. Echo Show 8 · Echo Show 11.

When an Echo Hub is the better product

If the aim is a permanent wall panel to control locks, plugs, cameras and automations, the 8-inch Echo Hub warrants consideration before spending more on an entertainment-focused Show 15. Check which devices require their own bridges, subscriptions or compatible network hardware. Matter, Thread and Zigbee are different technologies: a Matter-compatible accessory is not a guarantee that every feature or older proprietary device works directly.

Checklist before you order

  • Confirm generation: Show 15 (2024, second generation), Show 21 (2024), Show 8 (2025) and Show 11 (2025) should not be confused with similarly named older models.
  • Choose the room: wall space and a power cable matter as much as screen size. Check mounting and accessory costs.
  • Compare the delivered cost: merchant prices and promotions move; do not rely on an old RRP as a current checkout quote.
  • Check compatibility: Alexa-supported smart cameras, bulbs, connected-home bridges and your household’s preferred streaming apps.
  • Check privacy: household profiles, camera/mic controls, voice purchases and who can see the shared calendar or live video.
  • Plan networking: reliable Wi-Fi coverage is essential even on a wall-mounted device.

Our editorial verdict

For the right home, the Echo Show 15 (2nd generation) looks particularly useful: a large shared noticeboard with a smart-home control layer and actual streaming capability, without jumping to the wall space required by the 21-inch version. Our recommendation is conditional on wanting an always-visible family display. People who mainly need voice requests or a bedside clock should spend less; people who mainly want advanced smart-home automation should compare dedicated hubs before choosing a screen.
