Quick answer

eufyCam S3 Pro is the strongest wire-free premium option here for buyers who want 4K solar cameras, HomeBase local storage and no required monthly recording plan. Reolink RLK8-810B4-A is the better fit when reliable 24/7 wired PoE recording to an NVR matters more than cable-free installation. Tapo C460 KIT is the value-focused solar option, with 4K recording, local microSD storage and free person, pet and vehicle detection.

Best premium wire-free system: eufyCam S3 Pro

eufy’s current UK two-camera S3 Pro kit is listed at £499 at the time of our check. Each camera records up to 4K and uses eufy’s MaxColor Vision low-light system, a 1/1.8-inch sensor and an F1.0 lens. The cameras combine radar and PIR motion detection and include integrated SolarPlus 2.0 charging.

The important difference from many battery-camera packages is the HomeBase 3 approach. eufy lists 16GB of HomeBase storage with expansion up to 16TB, allowing local storage without a mandatory monthly recording subscription. The system also supports Apple Home, Alexa and Google Assistant, although eufy notes that Apple Home video is limited to 1080p.

Best for: households that want a clean wire-free installation, solar charging and locally managed recordings without making a cloud subscription central to the system.

Check before buying: Wi-Fi coverage at every mounting point, sunlight exposure, the HomeBase location and how much local storage you actually require. Battery/solar systems remain event-focused devices unless specifically operated in a powered continuous-recording mode.

Reolink’s RLK8-810B4-A is a four-camera 4K PoE kit built around an NVR. The included RLC-810A cameras record at 3840×2160, include microphones and IP67 weather protection, and use Ethernet for both data and power. The kit includes a 2TB hard drive and supports scheduled, motion-triggered or continuous recording.

PoE is less elegant to install than battery cameras because every camera needs an Ethernet run, but that cable also removes battery-management and Wi-Fi-reliability concerns. Reolink supports person, vehicle and motion detection and remote viewing through its app/client. Its current product page also describes expansion beyond the four supplied cameras.

Best for: homeowners who are renovating, can run Ethernet, or value predictable 24/7 recording more than installation convenience.

Check before buying: the exact NVR hardware revision, supported storage ceiling and camera-compatibility list. Reolink has sold more than one revision under similar kit names, so verify the exact bundle specification rather than copying a storage figure from an older review.

Best value solar option: Tapo C460 KIT

Tapo’s C460 KIT combines a 4K 8MP battery camera with an A201 solar panel. The current UK store has listed the single-camera kit around £99.99 on promotion, with pricing changing frequently. It supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi, an IP66 weather rating, colour night vision and a 10,000mAh battery.

The camera can store recordings locally on microSD cards up to 512GB or use the optional Tapo Care cloud service. Tapo provides person, vehicle and pet detection without requiring the cloud plan. Its “24/7 Continuous Capture” mode is not the same as a conventional 25fps NVR stream when nothing is happening: between detected events it can capture still frames at configurable intervals, switching to normal video when an event is detected.

Best for: buyers who want low installation effort, solar charging and a subscription-free local-storage option at a lower upfront price.

PoE or wireless cameras?

Choose PoE when continuous recording, stable networking and a central NVR are the priorities. Choose wire-free/solar when running cable would be difficult, the property is already finished, or flexible camera placement matters more than constant full-frame recording.

What to look for before buying

  • Recording model: event clips, interval capture and true continuous video are not the same thing.
  • Local storage: check whether storage is in each camera, in a hub/NVR, or only in the cloud.
  • Subscription dependence: distinguish optional cloud extras from features that stop working without a plan.
  • Network reliability: test Wi-Fi at the actual mounting point or plan PoE cable routes first.
  • Night performance: infrared, colour night vision and spotlight-assisted colour footage have different strengths.
  • Detection: person/vehicle/pet filters can reduce alerts, but no consumer detection system should be treated as infallible.
  • Privacy: use unique passwords, MFA where supported, current firmware and the minimum account sharing required.
  • Retention: decide how many days of footage you genuinely need before buying storage.

How we researched this guide

We checked the current UK eufy S3 Pro product page, Reolink’s UK RLK8-810B4-A specification page and TP-Link/Tapo’s UK C460 KIT product documentation. We compared recording architecture, networking, local-storage options, weather protection and deployment style rather than inventing image-quality or detection-accuracy test results.

Frequently asked questions

Do home security cameras need a subscription?

No. The systems in this guide all provide a route to local storage, although optional cloud services and advanced features vary.

Is PoE better than Wi-Fi?

PoE is usually more predictable for permanent 24/7 installations because one Ethernet cable carries power and data. Wi-Fi is easier to install and can be the better practical choice where cabling is unrealistic.

Is 4K necessary?

Not always. Placement, lens field of view, night performance and compression can matter as much as pixel count. 4K is useful when you need more detail, but it also increases storage and bandwidth requirements.

Final verdict

Choose eufyCam S3 Pro for a premium wire-free local-storage system, Reolink’s PoE kit for conventional 24/7 NVR recording, and Tapo C460 KIT when solar-powered flexibility and lower cost matter most. The right system is the one whose recording method, storage model and installation requirements match the property—not simply the one with the highest resolution.

The RLC-811A is an 8MP 4K PoE outdoor camera with 5x optical zoom, person/vehicle/animal detection and local recording options including microSD or a compatible Reolink NVR. Reolink specifies IEEE 802.3af active PoE, so buyers need an appropriate PoE switch, injector or compatible NVR; a normal router Ethernet port will not necessarily supply power.

Our assessment: this suits a permanent entrance, driveway or perimeter installation where Ethernet can be run and optical zoom is genuinely useful. It is less appropriate for a renter seeking a wire-free camera. Check the exact NVR hardware revision and recording capacity before building a multi-camera system, and consider privacy zones and neighbouring properties.
