Weekly Tech Product Radar — 5 October 2026

Last checked: 6 October 2026. This research-based update covers verified buyer-relevant developments from 28 September–4 October 2026. Safety notices take priority over commercial links. Hardware availability, regional software rollout and enterprise licensing are separated so readers can distinguish what is live now from what is still rolling out.

What matters most this week

  • Critical safety: affected Tesla Powerwall 2 units in Great Britain are subject to a free replacement programme because certain cells can develop an internal defect that may lead to thermal runaway and fire.
  • Business safety: Zebra has expanded a high-risk printer power-supply recall to PSUs manufactured from 1 October 2006 to 31 December 2012.
  • New consumer hardware: Amazon launched a redesigned Kindle family and a new Fire TV Stick 4K.
  • Business collaboration: Google Meet/Microsoft Teams room interoperability is generally available on supported Android/AOSP hardware, while Meet note-taking and occupancy settings require admin review.
  • Enterprise security: Google added a simpler Workspace client-side encryption setup for eligible Enterprise Plus organisations with Assured Controls.

Critical safety: Tesla Powerwall 2 fire-risk programme

Lifecycle: product safety report and modification/replacement programme. Date: 28 September 2026. Region: Great Britain.

The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards says certain cells in affected Powerwall 2 units can develop internal defects over time. Excessive lithium plating can contribute to cell-casing cracking, an internal short circuit, thermal runaway, overheating and fire.

Tesla has remotely discharged most affected units while replacements are arranged. Owners should keep their Powerwall 2 online, check the Tesla app for an affected-unit notification and not attempt to reactivate or repair an affected battery themselves. Required replacements are free of charge.

Important scope: this is not a blanket warning covering every Tesla battery, every Powerwall generation or every Powerwall 2 worldwide.

High priority: Zebra printer power-supply recall expansion

Lifecycle: expanded product recall. Date: 28 September 2026. Risk: high.

The UK recall covers affected Zebra printer power-supply units manufactured between 1 October 2006 and 31 December 2012. The hazard is fire at the power lead where it enters the appliance. Potentially associated printer ranges include GK, GC, GX, GT, ZP and other listed families, but the printer model alone does not prove that its PSU is affected.

Businesses should use Zebra’s official power-supply identification process and avoid substituting an unverified replacement merely because the connector fits.

Amazon redesigns the Kindle family

Announced: 1 October 2026. UK status: standard Kindle available; Paperwhite and Colorsoft availability/preorders rolling out.

Amazon introduced redesigned Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft devices. The standard 6-inch Kindle has 16GB storage and up to six weeks of quoted battery life. Paperwhite adds waterproofing, adjustable warm light and up to 12 weeks of quoted battery life, while Colorsoft is the colour-reading option for illustrated books, comics and travel guides.

New accessories include Kindle Click, a Bluetooth page-turn remote compatible with the 2026 range and Kindle models from 2024 onward. The Page-Turn Cover is more restricted and is listed for Paperwhite Signature Edition and Colorsoft Signature Edition.

UK buying safeguard: do not convert US launch prices into claimed UK prices. Check the current UK listing, generation, storage, advertisement configuration and accessory compatibility.

New Fire TV Stick 4K

Announced: 30 September 2026. UK status: shipping.

The new Fire TV Stick 4K uses Amazon’s Vega operating system and includes 8GB storage, a quad-core 1.7GHz processor, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3 and 4K output up to 60fps. Amazon’s Direct Power design can use a television’s USB port with the supplied cable, reducing the need for a separate power adapter.

Amazon now positions the standard Fire TV Stick 4K as the mainstream balance of speed and value, with 4K Max above it for greater performance, storage and premium home-cinema features. Fire TV Cube remains the enthusiast box.

Alexa+ regional caution: Alexa+ itself is already in UK Early Access, but the specific new Fire TV Alexa+ hub, deeper conversational entertainment features and upgraded mobile-app functions announced on 30 September begin in the US first and expand to more countries later. Do not sell UK buyers primarily on US-first functionality.

Google Meet and Microsoft Teams room interoperability

Lifecycle: generally available. Rollout: began 1 October 2026.

Supported Android/AOSP Google Meet hardware can now join Microsoft Teams meetings, while supported Android/AOSP Microsoft Teams Rooms hardware can join Google Meet meetings. This does not mean every Android meeting-room device is automatically compatible.

Businesses should verify the exact device, platform mode, firmware, administration policy, licensing and vendor support before standardising on a room system.

Google Meet note-taking defaults and occupancy counting

From 29 September, Google’s new “Take notes for me” pre-configuration can automatically enable note-taking for meetings with three or more people. Google says the setting is ON by default for Business Standard and Business Plus organisations and OFF by default for Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Frontline Plus and Google AI Pro for Education organisations.

Separately, occupancy counting began rolling out from 28 September to Android-based Logitech Gen 2 room hardware starting with Rally Board 65. Google states that the feature is off by default, processes occupancy detection locally and does not collect or store personally identifiable information. It should therefore be described as room occupancy counting, not individual employee identification.

Organisations should review notices, access, retention, meeting-consent and workplace-monitoring policies before changing these settings.

Google Workspace client-side encryption setup

Announced: 1 October 2026. Status: available to eligible organisations.

Google introduced a simplified client-side encryption setup using Cloud HSM Keys with Google Identity. The goal is to reduce the configuration burden while keeping customer-controlled encryption keys.

The simplified setup is currently listed for Enterprise Plus customers with Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus. It should not be described as an ordinary consumer or standard small-business Workspace feature.

CSE also does not remove the need for key governance, recovery planning, identity security, retention and endpoint protection.
