Research-led guide — checked 7 October 2026: Lighting has a major effect on webcam and camera quality, but the right choice depends on desk depth, camera position, room light and how much control you need. The Tools and Tech has not claimed hands-on testing of every light below. We compared current manufacturer specifications, mounting, output, colour-temperature control and creator workflow.
Quick answer
Elgato Key Light Neo is our compact all-round starting point for streaming and video calls because it combines USB power options, Wi-Fi control and a wide 2900–7000K range. It is currently about £89.99 with the standard mount. Logitech Litra Glow is the lower-cost compact choice at about £39.99. Godox ES30 is better suited to users who want a larger, more powerful dedicated panel, while Logitech Litra Beam LX combines front key lighting with rear RGB accent lighting for creators who want one fixture to handle both face light and background mood. Prices were checked 7 October 2026 and can change.
Current shortlist
Best compact all-rounder: Elgato Key Light Neo
Elgato specifies Key Light Neo at 400 lumens from basic USB-A power, 700 lumens from suitable USB-C power and up to 1000 lumens with an appropriate 3A external supply. It has CRI above 94, adjustable colour temperature from 2900–7000K and USB-C or 2.4/5GHz Wi-Fi connectivity. Its compact 150mm-square panel and monitor-mount format make it particularly useful where desk space is limited.
Best for: streamers, video calls and creators who want a small key light with software control. Check the power source if maximum brightness matters because output varies with available power.
Best value compact light: Logitech Litra Glow
Litra Glow uses Logitech TrueSoft diffusion and is designed as a small monitor-mounted streaming light. Current UK listings position it well below larger creator panels, making it a sensible entry point for improving a webcam image without building a full lighting rig.
Best for: calls, entry-level streaming and small desks. Its strength is soft close-range illumination rather than lighting a large room or standing far from the subject.
Best higher-output desk panel: Godox ES30
Godox lists the ES30 at up to 35W with a 2800–6500K colour-temperature range, CRI 96+, TLCI 97+ and 0–100% brightness control. At 4300K Godox specifies up to 2280 lux at 0.5m. It supports controls on the light itself and Bluetooth operation.
Best for: creators who need a more conventional dedicated panel and stronger output than a small monitor light. Its larger size and external power requirements make it less portable.
Best for key light plus RGB background: Logitech Litra Beam LX
Litra Beam LX is dual-sided: the front provides a diffused adjustable key light while the rear provides LIGHTSYNC RGB accent lighting. Logitech supports brightness and colour-temperature adjustment plus USB or Bluetooth control through G HUB.
Best for: gaming streams and creator desks where one fixture needs to illuminate the subject and add background colour. If RGB is not useful to you, a simpler key light is usually better value.
What to look for
Softness and size
A larger apparent light source generally produces softer facial shadows. Small lights work best close to the subject; moving them farther away reduces both softness and useful illumination.
Colour temperature
Adjustable white balance helps match daylight, warm lamps and other fixtures. Matching lights usually matters more than chasing the widest possible Kelvin range.
CRI and colour quality
High CRI or TLCI ratings help colours and skin tones reproduce more naturally on camera, although camera processing and white balance still matter.
Mounting
Check monitor clearance, clamp thickness, desk depth and whether the light needs to sit above, beside or behind the display. A powerful light is not useful if it cannot be positioned correctly.
Power and control
USB-powered lights reduce cable clutter, while larger lights may need dedicated mains power. App control is useful when the light is difficult to reach, but physical controls remain valuable when software is unavailable.
Do you need one light or two?
One well-positioned soft key light is enough for many streams and calls. A second light becomes useful for reducing contrast, lighting a background or separating the subject from the room. Spend on a second light only after the first light is positioned correctly.
How we researched this guide
We reviewed current UK and manufacturer documentation from Elgato, Logitech and Godox. This is a specification-led buying guide, not a claim that The Tools and Tech measured lux, colour accuracy or thermal behaviour independently.

Final verdict
Start with Key Light Neo if you want a compact, flexible creator light; choose Litra Glow when cost and desk space matter most; move to Godox ES30 when stronger dedicated output is useful; and choose Litra Beam LX when RGB background lighting is part of the setup. Pair the light with our webcam guide and beginner streaming setup guide, or continue with the Streaming Setup Builder and Creator Studio Builder.
Our lighting-first camera upgrade test
We approached creator lighting as a room problem before a product problem. A small diffused light close to the face may improve an ordinary webcam more than upgrading to a higher-resolution camera in the same dark room. The published lumen figure is not a complete measure of the illumination a face will receive: distance, diffusion, beam spread and ambient light all change the result.
For a compact desk, our priority would be a light that can sit or clamp safely without obstructing the monitor. For a larger filming area, output and placement flexibility become more valuable. Adjustable colour temperature helps match daylight or warm indoor lighting, but consistent positioning is usually more useful than frequently changing settings for dramatic effects.
Our assessment: improve the light falling on the subject before spending on a premium camera or decorative RGB background lighting. We have compared product specifications and lighting principles; we have not measured colour accuracy, flicker or lux output of the shortlisted fixtures.
