
PoE and Wi-Fi security cameras can both provide good video coverage, remote viewing and motion alerts, but they solve installation problems in very different ways. A PoE camera uses an Ethernet connection for networking and can receive power through that same cable. A Wi-Fi camera sends its data wirelessly, but it still needs power from a battery, plug or hardwired supply unless the product specifically provides another power method.
The better choice therefore depends less on headline resolution and more on the property, cable routes, number of cameras, recording method and how much maintenance you want after installation.

What PoE actually means
Power over Ethernet allows a compatible network device to receive DC power over copper Ethernet cabling. Cisco describes PoE as a way to deliver power to network devices over the same type of cable used for Ethernet communications, while camera manufacturers such as Ubiquiti document cameras that connect directly to a PoE switch for both power and data.
For a camera installation, that can reduce the need for a separate mains outlet beside every camera. Instead, the camera cable normally runs back to a PoE-capable switch, NVR with PoE ports, or a suitable PoE injector. The camera and power source must support compatible PoE standards and enough power must be available for every connected device.
Standard Ethernet distance rules still matter. Axis recommends a maximum network-cable length of 100 metres between a power source/base unit and camera in normal network-camera installations, although specialist extenders can go further. For a typical home, the more practical limit is often the difficulty of routing cable neatly rather than the theoretical distance.
Wi-Fi does not always mean wire-free
Wi-Fi describes the network connection, not necessarily the power source. Arlo’s current guidance notes that Wi-Fi cameras can be battery-powered, plugged into an outlet or hardwired for power. A plug-in Wi-Fi camera therefore removes the Ethernet data cable but still needs a power lead.
Battery cameras provide the greatest placement flexibility, but battery life depends on how often the camera records, video settings, temperature, low-light operation and connection quality. Arlo, for example, states that increasing the length, quality or quantity of recordings reduces battery life, and poor wireless connectivity can also affect battery performance.
Reliability and video traffic
A wired Ethernet connection gives each PoE camera a predictable physical path back to the network switch. It does not make the entire system immune to failure — switches, recorders, cables and storage can still fail — but the camera is not competing for radio airtime or depending on signal strength through walls.
Wi-Fi cameras can work very well on a properly designed wireless network. Problems are more likely when a camera is far from the access point, mounted through thick external walls, surrounded by competing networks or sharing a busy Wi-Fi channel with many other devices. Before committing to a Wi-Fi camera location, test signal quality at the exact mounting point with doors and windows in their normal positions.
Installation: where Wi-Fi usually wins
Wi-Fi is attractive because it can reduce cable work. A battery camera may need only a mounting point and sufficient wireless coverage. That can be particularly useful in rented properties, garages, sheds or locations where running Ethernet through finished walls would be disproportionate.
PoE requires more planning at the beginning. You need a route from each camera to the network equipment, suitable cable, weatherproof entry points and enough PoE ports and power budget. Outdoor cable runs should follow the camera and networking manufacturer’s installation guidance. Ubiquiti, for example, recommends appropriate outdoor Ethernet cabling, grounding and surge protection for its outdoor PoE camera installations.
The trade-off is that a properly installed PoE camera normally needs very little attention afterwards: there is no battery schedule and no nearby mains adapter to manage.
Recording and storage matter as much as the connection
Do not assume that PoE automatically means local recording or that Wi-Fi automatically means cloud recording. Those are separate product decisions. PoE systems are commonly sold with NVR-based local recording, while many consumer Wi-Fi cameras emphasise app and cloud services, but there are exceptions in both directions.
Before buying, check whether the system supports an NVR, microSD card, NAS, hub/base-station storage or cloud recording; whether continuous recording is supported; how many days of footage you want to retain; and whether important features require a subscription. If a cloud plan is central to the product, compare the renewal cost rather than only the camera’s purchase price.
What happens in a power cut?
A battery camera can keep its own camera electronics powered during a mains outage, but that does not guarantee remote viewing or recording if the router, Wi-Fi access point, base station, internet connection or recorder has lost power.
PoE can make backup planning simpler because camera power is centralised. If the PoE switch and recorder are connected to a correctly sized UPS, multiple cameras can potentially stay powered from one protected location. The rest of the network and recording chain must also remain available, so this should be designed as a system rather than treating the UPS as a guarantee.
Cybersecurity: both types need sensible configuration
A wired camera is not automatically secure, and a Wi-Fi camera is not automatically insecure. The important questions are how the camera authenticates users, how long the manufacturer supports it, whether firmware updates are delivered reliably, how remote access works and whether the account supports stronger authentication.
The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends changing default credentials where applicable, keeping smart-camera software and firmware updated, using two-step verification when available, and disabling remote access if you do not need it. The NCSC also warns that unnecessary port forwarding or UPnP exposure can increase risk on some home networks.
For a new system, favour manufacturers with a clear update policy, supported apps, two-step verification or passkey support where offered, and an understandable route for security updates. Avoid buying an unbranded internet-connected camera solely because its headline specification is high.
UK privacy considerations before mounting a camera
Camera placement matters regardless of whether the connection is PoE or Wi-Fi. The Information Commissioner’s Office says that if domestic CCTV captures images or audio beyond your property boundary — such as part of a neighbour’s property, public area or communal space — data-protection rules can apply. The ICO recommends positioning cameras to capture only what is needed where possible, using appropriate signage, keeping footage secure and deleting recordings regularly or automatically.
