Tesla Powerwall 2 Safety Alert: Fire Risk and Free Replacement Programme in Great Britain

Safety alert — 28 September 2026. This article concerns affected Tesla Powerwall 2 systems in Great Britain. It is not a blanket warning covering every Tesla battery, every Powerwall product or every Powerwall 2 worldwide.

What has happened?

The UK Office for Product Safety and Standards published a Product Safety Report for Tesla Powerwall 2 on 28 September 2026. The report says certain battery cells in affected units may develop internal defects over time. The identified issue can lead to an internal short circuit and thermal runaway, increasing the risk of overheating and fire.

The official report says Tesla has initiated a replacement programme for affected units. Most affected Powerwall 2 systems have been remotely discharged pending replacement, with any remaining affected units being discharged by Tesla technicians.

What Powerwall 2 owners should do

  • Keep the Powerwall 2 connected and online so Tesla can communicate with the system.
  • Check the Tesla app for a notification confirming whether the unit is affected.
  • If a replacement is required, contact the original Tesla Certified Installer to arrange installation.
  • If the original installer is unavailable, use Tesla Support or the official Powerwall 2 Replacement Program route referenced by the UK safety notice.
  • Do not attempt to repair, reactivate or modify an affected unit yourself.

The UK safety report states that affected Powerwall 2 units will be replaced free of charge.

What this alert does not mean

This is not evidence that every Powerwall 2 in Great Britain is affected. Owners should determine status through Tesla’s notification process rather than assuming from the model name alone. It also does not apply automatically to Powerwall 3 or to unrelated Tesla battery products.

Buying and recommendation policy

The Tools and Tech will not promote or place an affiliate buying recommendation for Powerwall 2 beside this safety alert. Any future comparison involving Tesla home batteries must separate Powerwall 2 from other generations, identify the region, and reflect current official safety guidance.
