Research-led guide — checked 7 October 2026: A stream controller is useful when it removes repeated clicks and keyboard shortcuts from a real workflow. The Tools and Tech has not claimed hands-on testing of every controller below. We compared current manufacturer hardware, software integrations, control types, current UK pricing and suitability for streaming, audio and creative work.
Quick answer
Elgato Stream Deck Neo is the easiest lower-cost starting point with eight LCD keys, an Infobar and touch controls at a current official UK price of £99.99. The standard Elgato Stream Deck is the balanced choice at £139.99 when you primarily want programmable buttons. Stream Deck + is better at £179.99 when audio levels, lighting or creative parameters benefit from physical dials. Logitech MX Creative Console is the strongest alternative for editing and design workflows, with a keypad plus separate tactile dialpad at £189.99.

Current shortlist
Best entry controller: Elgato Stream Deck Neo
Stream Deck Neo provides eight customisable LCD keys, two Touch Points and an Infobar. It uses Elgato’s Stream Deck software, profiles, plugins, pages, folders and Multi Actions.
Best for: first-time streamers and productivity users who want to automate scene changes, mute controls, app launches and repetitive actions without dedicating a large section of the desk to a controller.
Best balanced button controller: Elgato Stream Deck
The standard Stream Deck provides 15 programmable display keys and access to Elgato’s plugin/profile ecosystem. It offers more actions per page than Neo while retaining the simple button-first approach rather than adding analogue controls.
Best for: OBS scenes, sound effects, smart-home/lighting shortcuts, productivity macros and creator workflows where buttons matter more than knobs.
Best for audio and tactile adjustment: Elgato Stream Deck +
Stream Deck + combines eight LCD keys with four pushable 360-degree encoders and an LCD touch strip. Elgato positions it for audio mixing, production control and studio workflows in addition to standard Stream Deck actions.
Best for: streamers who routinely change microphone, music, game or lighting levels. A dial is more natural than repeatedly pressing buttons when a value needs gradual adjustment.
Best for editing and creative applications: Logitech MX Creative Console
MX Creative Console splits control between a display-key keypad and a wireless dialpad. Logitech supports custom profiles and plugins through Options+, including workflows for Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Lightroom, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Figma and other applications.
Best for: video editors, photographers and designers who want physical analogue adjustments as well as shortcut keys. It is less centred on live-streaming software than Stream Deck, so choose it for the applications you actually use.
What should a stream controller actually do?
Useful actions include changing OBS scenes, muting microphones, triggering sound effects, controlling lights, launching apps, changing audio levels, starting recordings, switching profiles and grouping several steps into one macro. If you only need two or three shortcuts, keyboard hotkeys may be enough.
Keys vs dials
Buttons are ideal for discrete actions such as start/stop, scene changes and macros. Dials make more sense for volume, brightness, zoom, timeline movement, brush size and other continuously adjustable values.
Software ecosystem matters
The hardware is only half of the product. Check whether your apps have maintained plugins, whether actions can be built from ordinary keyboard shortcuts and whether profiles can switch automatically between applications.
How we researched this guide
We reviewed current UK product and software information from Elgato and Logitech. This is a workflow/specification-led guide rather than a claim that The Tools and Tech tested every third-party plugin or application integration.

Final verdict
Choose Stream Deck Neo to get started, the standard Stream Deck for a button-heavy streaming workflow, Stream Deck + when dials improve audio and studio control, or MX Creative Console when editing and design are the priority. Build the rest of the system in the Streaming Setup Builder or Creator Studio Builder.
Our stream-controller return-on-time test
We evaluated these controllers by the number of repeated actions they can remove from a real workflow. A device with fifteen display keys may be more useful than a dial-heavy unit when the main job is switching OBS scenes or launching macros. Dials become valuable when adjusting microphone level, lighting, brush size or timeline position throughout a session. That distinction matters more than the number of controls on the front panel.
Before buying, identify five actions you perform repeatedly and check whether the manufacturer’s software supports them through maintained integrations or ordinary keyboard shortcuts. If those actions can be handled comfortably with existing hotkeys, the controller may add little value. If they involve several applications or repeated fine adjustments, dedicated controls become more persuasive.
Our assessment: choose the control layout around existing software, not around the most impressive hardware photograph. This is an integration and workflow comparison, not a claim that we have tested every third-party plugin.
