Best UPS for a Home Office and PC

Research-led guide — checked 6 October 2026: A UPS is there to keep equipment running long enough to ride through a short outage or shut down safely; it is not a substitute for a generator or home battery. The Tools and Tech has not claimed hands-on runtime testing of the products below. We compared current UK manufacturer specifications, watt capacity, topology, waveform, outlets, replaceable batteries and management features.

Quick answer

APC Back-UPS Pro BR900G2I is a sensible mainstream office choice for lower-power PCs, monitors and networking. CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD-UK is our stronger gaming/workstation direction because it provides 1500VA/900W with pure sine-wave battery output and active-PFC compatibility. APC Back-UPS Pro BR1600SI is another high-capacity sine-wave option with 1600VA/960W, while Eaton 5SC1500I is a business-oriented 1500VA/1050W line-interactive model with eight IEC outputs.

Current shortlist

Best mainstream office choice: APC Back-UPS Pro BR900G2I

Schneider Electric lists the BR900G2I at 900VA/540W with six IEC outlets, automatic voltage regulation, an LCD status screen, USB-C charging ports and data-line surge protection.

Best for: a typical office PC, monitor and network equipment where 540W output is sufficient. Check the actual combined load before buying; a 900VA label does not mean it can power a 900W computer.

Best for a higher-power gaming PC: CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD-UK

CyberPower specifies 1500VA/900W, line-interactive topology, automatic voltage regulation and pure sine-wave battery output. It is explicitly designed for conventional and active-PFC power supplies. The UK model has four IEC C13 and two UK outlets, with a manufacturer-specified runtime of around 10 minutes at half load and 3 minutes at full load.

Best for: gaming PCs and workstations where a modern active-PFC PSU and higher load make waveform and watt capacity important. Runtime falls sharply as load rises, so do not size it at the edge of its 900W limit.

Best premium APC option: Back-UPS Pro BR1600SI

APC lists the BR1600SI at 1600VA/960W with eight IEC C13 outlets, sine-wave battery output, AVR, LCD monitoring, USB-A/USB-C charging and a user-replaceable battery.

Best for: higher-load office or enthusiast systems where you want APC’s Back-UPS Pro ecosystem but need more headroom than a 900VA unit.

Best business/workstation alternative: Eaton 5SC1500I

Eaton specifies the 5SC1500I at 1500VA/1050W with line-interactive topology, sine-wave output, eight C13 outlets, LCD status information, USB/serial management and support for Eaton power-management software.

Best for: a workstation, small server or business desk where outlet count, management and a higher 1050W rating matter more than consumer-style USB charging features.

How to size a UPS

Use watts, not VA alone

The UPS must support the real wattage of the connected equipment. Add the PC, displays, network gear and anything else that must remain powered, then leave reasonable headroom for transient load and future upgrades.

Do not put everything on battery backup

Printers, heaters and other high-current devices can consume valuable UPS capacity or may not be suitable for battery-backed outlets. Protect the PC, display, router/ONT and essential storage first.

Runtime is load-dependent

A UPS that lasts ten minutes at half load may last only a few minutes near full capacity. For desktop computing, the goal is often enough time to save work and shut down safely rather than hours of operation.

Pure sine wave and active-PFC PSUs

Modern PC power supplies commonly use active power-factor correction. A pure sine-wave UPS is the safer premium direction for high-end PCs and sensitive equipment. Lower-cost line-interactive units can still be appropriate for ordinary office loads, but check the UPS and PSU guidance if compatibility matters.

AVR

Automatic Voltage Regulation can correct moderate mains voltage changes without immediately switching to battery. That reduces unnecessary battery cycling where the supply is unstable but has not failed completely.

Battery replacement

UPS batteries are consumables. A user-replaceable battery and an available official replacement pack can materially extend the useful life of the UPS. Check battery age and self-test results rather than assuming the battery will last as long as the electronics.

How we researched this guide

We reviewed current UK documentation from Schneider Electric/APC, CyberPower and Eaton. This is a specification-led guide; The Tools and Tech has not independently measured transfer time, sustained runtime, acoustic noise or battery ageing.

Final verdict

Choose BR900G2I for a normal office desk, CP1500EPFCLCD-UK for a higher-power gaming/workstation PC, BR1600SI for a larger APC sine-wave setup, or Eaton 5SC1500I for business/workstation use with higher watt capacity and more IEC outlets. Add backup power to the Home Office Builder or Coding Workspace Builder.

Our real-world UPS sizing worksheet

We recommend treating the UPS as a short-duration shutdown system. Begin by listing the equipment that must remain powered long enough to save work: PC or workstation, essential display, router or fibre terminal, and any storage device that needs graceful shutdown. Check each device’s realistic power consumption and add the loads in watts. The UPS must be rated above that total with suitable headroom; its VA rating alone is not the wattage it can deliver.

Next, examine the manufacturer’s runtime chart at the combined load, not at an attractive low-load reference point. A unit with adequate power capacity may still offer only a few minutes at high load. Confirm output sockets, any required IEC leads, shutdown-software compatibility and the cost and availability of an approved replacement battery. Do not connect a laser printer or high-current appliance to battery-backed sockets unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

Our judgement: choose dependable shutdown and recovery over the largest headline VA number. The figures in this guide are manufacturer specifications, not our own discharge tests.

CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD-UK: retailer availability warning

Scan UK marks its listing for CyberPower CP1500EPFCLCD-UK as End Of Life and says the product is no longer available to purchase there. This does not establish manufacturer-wide discontinuation or availability at every retailer. Do not assume this model is currently buyable from Scan. See Scan’s exact-model notice. Check current availability of the other shortlisted UPS models before purchasing.
