Full-body VR tracking: Quest, SteamVR and PICO options

Full-body tracking (FBT) adds movement from your waist and feet, and sometimes knees, chest or elbows, to a VR avatar. The headset alone does not provide this in every app. Your route depends on the headset, whether you use a PC, and what the game supports. This is a research guide, not a hands-on test.

Start with the app, then the hardware

  1. Confirm that the app supports full-body tracking on the platform you will actually use: standalone headset, PC VR through SteamVR, or both. Standalone Quest and PC-connected Quest are different setups.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility list for your headset, software and operating system. A tracker that works in VRChat may not work in every VR game.
  3. Calculate the complete cost: tracker count, dongle or base stations, straps, charging and any PC connection.
  4. Plan safe room space and calibration. For waist-and-feet tracking, a three-tracker layout is a common starting point; extra tracking points and avatar behavior depend on the app.

Quest users: a useful distinction

For standalone VRChat on compatible Quest models, SlimeVR documents an OSC route without a gaming PC. For PC VR, VIVE Ultimate Tracker can work with third-party SteamVR-compatible headsets such as Quest through a Windows PC and VIVE Hub; VIVE says direct standalone pairing with third-party headsets is not supported. Lighthouse trackers use base stations and require additional setup. Do not assume that a Quest accessory listing means standalone support.
